One of the biggest stumbling blocks to getting grant funding is knowing which grants you’re eligible for.

Raise your hand if you’ve ever gotten excited about a grant you’ve found only to realize that you’re not even eligible?

Not a great feeling, I know.

And yet it happens all the time.

Grantmakers have their own missions, and their grant eligibility requirements often depend on their mission.

In this video, I share the four main eligibility requirements for most grants, so that you can quickly assess whether a grant is a good fit.

  • Geographic location & scope
  • Type of grant applicant
  • Type of funding needed
  • Area of interest

Note: There is a difference between being eligible for a grant and being qualified. The term qualified denotes a higher level of expectation. Don’t worry, though, we have a video coming up that gets into what it means to be qualified for a grant.

For now, let’s focus on how to tell which grants you’re eligible for.

How to start searching for grants you’re eligible for

After watching the video, you might be thinking, “Okay, these definitions are great, and now I understand grant eligibility, but how do I apply this knowledge?”

Excellent question.

Start by listing your geographic scope/location, what type of applicant you are, the type of funding you need, and your area of interest.

Then, head to your favorite grants database and begin filtering your results based on these criteria.
