Flat fee gives them a clear outcome and a clear process. It also gives you a delivery model you can repeat.

But it only works if you stop selling open-ended “grant writing.”

Why packages beat hourly (and it’s not just a preference): Project-based pricing is widely recommended in grant consulting because it gives clients cost predictability and makes it easier to budget for the work product, while also removing the incentive to “sell time” instead of results. The Rule for Flat-Fee Grant Consulting Packages: Deliverables, Inputs, Timeline

Flat fee works when you define three things up front.

1) Deliverables

A deliverable is not “grant writing support.” A deliverable is a file, a submission, a narrative, a review memo, or a set of edits. (If clients keep asking “can you also…?”, use these scope creep contract clauses.)

When you sell deliverables, the client can decide.

When you sell “support,” the project never ends.

2) Inputs

Flat fee breaks down when you are doing admin work for free.

Define what materials you need and when you need them. If the client cannot provide the inputs, the package does not start.

If your scope does not include an asset collection deadline, you will end up holding the timeline and the stress.

3) Timeline

Packages need a clock.

The timeline makes the scope enforceable and keeps you from becoming the emergency contact.

Flat Fee Grant Package #1: Grant Readiness Assessment + Grant Opportunity List (Grant Research + Grant Readiness Assessment)

This package is for clients who keep chasing the wrong grants, and for consultants who want to be strategic before they commit to writing for a client.

Typical investment (range): $3,600+ for the Grant Readiness Assessment + Grant Opportunity List. Readiness gap-close work beyond the assessment is typically billed as Support at $200/hour.

Includes:

  • One focused kickoff call to clarify goals, timeline, and decision-maker
  • A grant readiness review of your core materials (what’s strong, what’s missing, what’s the next step you might need to take)
  • A tailored readiness checklist with clear instructions for closing gaps
  • A curated funder list (typically 25-30 opportunities) built using a decision matrix and AI-supported scoring
  • A 12-month submission strategy with sequencing (what to pursue first, what to save, what to skip unless you have time)
  • A simple tracking file so the pipeline is usable, not just “a list”

What it looks like in real life:

If you’re not ready for grants, you leave with the exact reasons why (capacity, attachments, match, data, evaluation, staffing) and a plan for building toward them without wasting a quarter.

You also leave with a prioritized plan of action for each grant application you are not just eligible for, but well-qualified for.

Does not include:

  • Writing or submitting full grant applications
  • Funder relationship outreach done-for-you
  • Unlimited prospect research or “keep adding more funders” requests

Boundary that protects you: the prospecting window is defined.

Flat Fee Grant Package #2: Standard Grant Narrative (Reusable Grant Narrative Template)

This is the “build the asset once, reuse it for years” package. It’s the most profitable scope because it turns your expertise into infrastructure.

Typical investment (range): $4,000+

Includes:

  • Deep-dive data gathering and interview(s) to capture your programs, outcomes, and story
  • A comprehensive Standard Grant Narrative (the reusable backbone) that centralizes:
    • Multiple mission/history versions for different funders
    • Statement(s) of need for the organization and key programs
    • Program descriptions written in funder language (goals, activities, outputs, outcomes)
    • Evaluation language and basic measurement framing
    • Boilerplate sections you can adapt quickly (equity framing, partnerships, sustainability)
  • Two revision rounds focused on accuracy, clarity, and general funder alignment

What it looks like in real life:

Instead of rewriting your origin story and program description for every opportunity, you pull a clean, modular version that already matches how reviewers read.

Does not include:

  • New data collection (you provide program data; we shape it)
  • Full program redesign from scratch
  • Unlimited revisions or ongoing edits for future opportunities

Boundary that keeps your margin: two revision rounds, then a change order.

If the draft is not far enough along (or the scope is closer to writing the full narrative from scratch), the Grant Narrative Development intensive starts at $4,000.

Includes:

  • A full proposal review against the rubric (if available) and funder guidelines
  • A scorecard-style assessment (what’s strong, what’s unclear, what will get flagged)
  • A revised draft of the narrative
  • Two working sessions to review feedback and and resolve “we don’t know what to say here” revision suggestions
  • A final readiness check: formatting, compliance, and last-pass clarity

Does not include:

  • Unlimited rewriting or “keep tweaking” cycles
  • Owning the portal or becoming the default submission admin
  • Overnight turnarounds without an explicit rush fee

Boundary that prevents burnout and rushed work: delivered over 10 business days. Rush timelines require a rush fee.
